Stamping Out the Idols
Sylvia served as a volunteer at the age of 75. Her team was made up of her daughter, her son-in-law, her grandchildren, and a college student. They taught English and sports to rural teenage students. One day, Sylvia and a Chinese-speaking friend walked out into nearby fields where farmers were harvesting garlic. They stopped to help and as the work finished up for the day, the farmers invited the two women into their home. Sylvia responded graciously to the hospitality of the host family while her Chinese-speaking friend shared the Gospel. Two of the farmers opened their hearts to Jesus that day. Then, as if to convey their profound sense of salvation, they immediately began to rub out the faces of the idols printed on papers attached to their front door.
Opening the Door
After hearing about Jesus, a young Chinese man indicated that he was not yet ready to receive salvation. He was told by the Christian who had shared the gospel with him to be ready to receive Christ at any time. A few days later the Christian received a phone call. "Do you remember me?", asked the young Chinese man. "I heard Jesus knocking at my heart's door and I let Him in today."
